Tibetans-in-Exile Observe 11th Panchen Lama’s 37th Birthday in Shimla, Renew Calls for Release

Date:

The Tibetan community in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, gathered on April 25, 2026, to celebrate the 37th birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama. While the occasion was marked with traditional prayers and the hoisting of colorful prayer flags, the atmosphere remained somber, shadowed by his continued disappearance for over three decades.

Tsewang Phuntsok, the Chief Representative of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) for Shimla, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the profound spiritual and cultural significance of this day for Tibetans worldwide.

A Day of Prayer and Remembrance

“For Tibetans, it is a very important day. Today we are celebrating the 11th Panchen Lama’s birthday,” Phuntsok stated. He reminded those gathered that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was born on April 25, 1989, in Lhari County, Tibet.

The celebrations in Shimla included the offering of “Sangsol” (incense burning ceremony) and the chanting of special prayers for the long life and well-being of the Panchen Lama. Despite the festive decorations and traditional Tibetan music, the underlying message was one of persistent hope and a demand for justice.

The World’s Youngest Political Prisoner

The history of the 11th Panchen Lama is one of the most enduring mysteries and human rights concerns in modern Tibetan history.

  • Recognition: In May 1995, at the age of six, he was recognized by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama.
  • Disappearance: Just days after the announcement, on May 17, 1995, the child and his family were taken into custody by Chinese authorities.
  • Current Status: For 31 years, his whereabouts have remained unknown. While Chinese officials have occasionally claimed he is living a “normal life” and does not wish to be disturbed, no independent observer or international body has been allowed to meet him.

The CTA and various human rights organizations frequently refer to him as the “world’s youngest political prisoner,” a title he has effectively held since his early childhood.

The Spiritual Significance of the Panchen Lama

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Panchen Lama holds a position second only to the Dalai Lama. The relationship between the two is often described as “sun and moon,” as they traditionally play a vital role in recognizing the reincarnations of one another.

By celebrating his birthday in exile, the Tibetan community seeks to:

  1. Preserve Identity: Reaffirming their religious traditions and the legitimacy of the Dalai Lama’s choice.
  2. Global Awareness: Keeping the issue of the missing Panchen Lama on the international human rights agenda.
  3. Protest Suppression: Silently but firmly resisting the state-selected proxy recognized by the Chinese government, whom the majority of the Tibetan diaspora does not accept.

Renewed Demands for Transparency

During the Shimla event, speakers called upon the international community and the United Nations to press for verifiable information regarding the Panchen Lama’s safety and location. Tsewang Phuntsok’s address highlighted that the passage of time has not diminished the devotion of the Tibetan people.

“We want the world to know that we haven’t forgotten,” one attendee noted. “Even after 31 years, our faith in the true Panchen Lama remains unshaken.”

As the sun set over the hills of Shimla, the prayer flags continued to flutter—a symbol of the community’s enduring hope that the 11th Panchen Lama might one day walk free and fulfill his spiritual duties for the Tibetan people.
