2570th Buddha Jayanti Celebrated in Shimla: A Global Call for Peace and Compassion

Date:

SHIMLA – In a vibrant display of faith and cultural heritage, the Tibetan community in exile, alongside Himalayan Buddhists, gathered at the Dorje Drak Monastery in Panthaghati, Shimla, to celebrate Buddha Jayanti. This year’s observance marks the 2570th birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha, a milestone that resonated with a profound message of global harmony amidst rising international tensions.

The event, organized under the aegis of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), drew hundreds of devotees, including monks, local residents, and representatives from the Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Ladakh regions. The atmosphere was one of solemnity and spiritual renewal as the community united to honor the life, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (passing) of the “Light of Asia.”

A Prayer for Global Harmony

Speaking at the event, Lhakpa Tsering, the Chief Representative Officer of the CTA in Shimla, emphasized the critical relevance of Buddhist teachings in the modern era. He noted that while the community celebrates this sacred anniversary, their hearts remain heavy with the news of ongoing conflicts across the globe.

The celebration served as a platform for collective prayer, specifically focusing on the restoration of peace in West Asia. Devotees and monks alike highlighted that the Buddha’s message of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Karuna (compassion) is not merely a religious doctrine but a necessary blueprint for survival in a fragmented world.

Honoring the Legacy of the Dalai Lama

The celebrations this year carry additional weight as they coincide with the global observance of the 90th birth year of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The year 2026 has been designated by many followers as a “Year of Compassion” to honor his lifelong commitment to human values and religious harmony.

During the rituals at Dorje Drak, special prayers were offered for the long life and health of the Dalai Lama. Participants credited him with the revitalization of the Nalanda tradition in the Himalayan belt, which has helped preserve the ancient wisdom of logic and philosophy among the younger generation of the Tibetan diaspora and Indian Buddhists.

Rituals and Cultural Preservation

The day began with early morning prayers and the lighting of butter lamps, symbolizing the dispelling of the “darkness of ignorance.” The Dorje Drak Monastery—a significant seat of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism—was adorned with prayer flags and floral decorations.

Key highlights of the celebration included:

  • Chanting of Sacred Sutras: Led by senior Lamas, the congregation engaged in rhythmic chanting for world peace.
  • Cultural Exchange: The gathering of diverse Himalayan communities showcased a unique blend of Indo-Tibetan cultural synergy.
  • Discourse on Mindfulness: Acharyas (teachers) delivered sermons on the Four Noble Truths, urging attendees to practice mindfulness in their daily lives.

The Significance of Vaishakh Purnima

The festival of Buddha Purnima (or Buddha Jayanti) is considered “thrice-blessed” because it is believed that the Buddha’s birth, his attainment of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and his final departure from the physical world all occurred on the same full moon day of the month of Vaishakh.

For the residents of Shimla, the event was a reminder of the city’s long-standing history as a sanctuary for spiritual diversity. As the sun set over the hills of Himachal Pradesh, the echoes of the evening prayers served as a quiet but powerful testament to the enduring power of peace over conflict.

In a world increasingly defined by digital noise and geopolitical strife, the 2570th Buddha Jayanti in Shimla stood as a beacon of hope—a reminder that the path to a better future begins with a compassionate heart.
