Tribal Students Set for a Leap Into Space Science as 75 Space Labs Open Across India

In a major initiative aimed at bringing cutting-edge science education to some of the country’s most remote regions, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, in collaboration with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), has established 75 Space Labs in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across India. The project is expected to benefit more than 50,000 tribal students and strengthen access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in underserved areas.

The laboratories have been set up under BPCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme with an investment of nearly ₹12 crore. The initiative seeks to provide tribal students with practical exposure to space science, astronomy, satellite technology, and scientific innovation—fields that have traditionally remained out of reach for many rural and tribal communities.

Bringing Space Education to Tribal Classrooms

The newly established labs are equipped with advanced educational tools and scientific models designed to make learning interactive and experiential. Students will have access to replicas of India’s launch vehicles and satellites, astronomy exhibits, telescopes, STEM learning kits, and demonstration models explaining concepts such as eclipses, planetary motion, seasons, and satellite communication.

The project is being implemented with technical support from agencies recognised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), ensuring that students receive exposure to authentic scientific learning resources and contemporary developments in India’s space programme.

Expanding Opportunities Beyond Traditional Education

Education experts believe that introducing tribal students to advanced scientific concepts at an early stage can significantly improve curiosity-driven learning and encourage participation in innovation-focused activities. The initiative is expected to create awareness about career opportunities in aerospace engineering, astronomy, geospatial technology, meteorology, artificial intelligence, and scientific research.

The Space Labs are also expected to increase participation of tribal students in science fairs, astronomy camps, innovation challenges, and national-level STEM competitions, helping bridge the educational divide between urban and rural India.

Strengthening Eklavya Schools as Centres of Excellence

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs currently operates nearly 500 functional Eklavya Model Residential Schools across the country, providing quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe students from Class VI to XII. These institutions have emerged as important centres for academic development, skill building, sports, and cultural preservation in tribal regions.

Officials say the addition of Space Labs will further enhance the learning ecosystem within EMRS campuses and align with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning, critical thinking, and equitable access to quality education.

A Step Towards Inclusive Scientific Growth

As India expands its footprint in space exploration and emerging technologies, experts believe initiatives like these are essential to ensuring that students from every corner of the country can participate in the nation’s scientific journey. By bringing advanced STEM infrastructure to tribal schools, the government and industry partners hope to nurture the next generation of scientists, engineers, innovators, and researchers from tribal communities.

The programme is being viewed as a significant step towards educational inclusion, ensuring that talent and ambition are not limited by geography but supported through access to modern learning opportunities.
