The Department of Posts has released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the birth centenary of Padma Vibhushan Satish Gujral, one of India’s most celebrated painters, sculptors, architects, muralists and writers.
The commemorative stamp was unveiled by Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia during a special ceremony held at Bikaner House in New Delhi.
Speaking at the event, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia described Satish Gujral as a visionary artist whose work enriched Indian art and philately.
In a post on X, Scindia said:
“Released a commemorative postage stamp marking the birth centenary of the legendary painter, sculptor and architect Padma Vibhushan Shri Satish Gujral, whose extraordinary artistic vision added a new dimension to India Post philately through his iconic stamp designs.”
The commemorative stamp features:
- A portrait of Satish Gujral seated with a paintbrush.
- A reflective pose symbolising his lifelong dedication to art.
- A vibrant background inspired by his distinctive artistic style.
- Rich shades of purple and blue, representing creativity and dignity.
The design celebrates Gujral’s versatility and enduring artistic legacy.
During the ceremony, Scindia recalled Satish Gujral’s long association with the Department of Posts.
He particularly highlighted Gujral’s design of the 1996 commemorative stamp issued to mark the 125th anniversary of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), noting that the artist transformed the concept of communication into a powerful visual expression.
Highlighting the importance of stamps, the Communications Minister said:
“Postage stamps are very small in size, but they carry the soul of our country. They carry the passion of 140 crore people, travelling from city to city, village to village, carrying India’s history, culture and collective memories across generations.”
He expressed confidence that the newly released commemorative stamp would preserve Satish Gujral’s legacy and inspire future generations of artists.

Born on December 25, 1925, in Jhelum (now in Pakistan), Satish Gujral is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Indian art.
He moved to India in 1944 to study at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai.
The tragic experiences of the Partition of India deeply influenced his acclaimed Partition Series, widely considered among his finest artistic works.
Over a career spanning several decades, Satish Gujral excelled across numerous disciplines, including:
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Architecture
- Murals
- Graphic design
- Literature
His contributions significantly shaped India’s modern artistic landscape. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, in 1999. Satish Gujral passed away on March 26, 2020, in New Delhi at the age of 94.
