Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Mingles with Tourists and Locals on Shimla’s Mall Road

Date:

Shimla | May 4, 2026 — In a heartwarming display of public engagement, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu spent an evening walking through the historic Mall Road in Shimla. Ditching the formal motorcade, the CM took the opportunity to interact directly with local residents and tourists, highlighting the state’s hospitality and its burgeoning tourism sector.

The visit, which took place over the weekend, saw the Chief Minister stopping to chat with families and young visitors who had flocked to the “Queen of Hills” to escape the rising temperatures in the plains.

A “Captivating” Experience for Visitors

Sharing his thoughts on the encounter, CM Sukhu noted that the enthusiasm of visitors toward the state’s mountain ranges and cultural heritage remains a primary source of inspiration for the government.

For many tourists, it was a surprise to see the head of the state walking among them without the usual barriers of high-security protocol. Several visitors were seen taking selfies and sharing their experiences of the state’s “Dev Bhoomi” (Land of the Gods) hospitality directly with him.

Focus on Strengthening Tourism Infrastructure

This informal visit aligns with the state government’s broader vision to transform Himachal Pradesh into a premier global tourism destination. Earlier this year, the administration announced a massive investment plan:

  • ₹3,000 Crore Investment: The government has earmarked significant funds to upgrade tourism facilities and hospitality services across the state.
  • Infrastructure Revamp: Projects worth ₹2,350 crore are currently underway to improve road connectivity to remote scenic spots and modernize urban centers like Shimla and Dharamshala.
  • Ease of Information: The CM recently inspected the newly upgraded Tourist Information Centre on Mall Road, ensuring that visitors have access to real-time assistance and digital resources.

The state has set an ambitious target of attracting five crore tourists annually, emphasizing that a thriving tourism sector is the backbone of the local economy.

Maintaining the “Clean and Green” Image

During his interactions, CM Sukhu emphasized the importance of preserving the state’s natural beauty. He urged both locals and tourists to contribute to the “Clean Himachal” initiative, noting that the lush green valleys and dense forests are the state’s most valuable assets.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the resilience of the people of Himachal, thanking them for their support during previous natural calamities and stating that the state is now fully “ready and open” to welcome the world with better safety standards and infrastructure.

A Growing Cultural Hub

Beyond the natural scenery, the CM’s walk highlighted Shimla’s role as a cultural hub. Recent additions to the Mall Road area, such as the vibrant murals depicting the ‘Pahari Niti’ (local folk dance) and large LED screens for public events, have turned the promenade into a communal space for art and recreation.

As the evening concluded, the Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to making every tourist’s stay comfortable. “Tourism is a major pillar of our economy,” he said. “Strengthening this sector not only boosts our finances but provides vital employment to our youth.”
