India Secures Over 5.5 Lakh MTPA Green Hydrogen Offtake Commitments

Date:

India has secured signed green hydrogen offtake commitments totalling 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of October 2026, marking significant progress in the country’s clean energy ambitions.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Indian companies signed 18 new offtake agreements in 2026 for more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen equivalent. The commitments are expected to attract investments of around ₹90,000 crore.

Launched in 2023 with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, consumption and exports.

By 2030, the mission targets:

  • Annual green hydrogen production of at least 5 million metric tonnes.
  • Addition of 125 GW of renewable energy capacity.
  • Investments exceeding ₹8 lakh crore.
  • More than six lakh full-time jobs.
  • Avoidance of 50 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The latest offtake commitments represent approximately 11% of the mission’s production target.

Indian companies are building partnerships with buyers in Japan, Germany, South Korea and other markets.

Key agreements include:

  • ACME Group: Agreements covering green ammonia supply to Japan’s IHI and green methanol supply to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.
  • Larsen & Toubro: Partnership with Japan’s ITOCHU for a green ammonia supply project, with deliveries expected from December 2029.
  • Reliance Industries: Long-term supply agreement with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation valued at more than US$3 billion, with deliveries expected by 2028.
  • AM Green: Agreements involving renewable ammonia supply to Germany’s H2Global programme and Uniper, alongside a separate agreement with Japan’s JERA.

Other companies, including Agastya and Jouno Joules, have also entered into proposed or binding supply arrangements.

India is also encouraging domestic industries to adopt green hydrogen through the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme.

Under the programme, agreements have been signed for supplying 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser units.

Projects have also been awarded for supplying 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to refineries operated by IOCL, BPCL, HPCL and Numaligarh Refinery Limited.

These initiatives aim to create domestic demand and support industrial decarbonisation.

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity to split water through electrolysis. Its derivatives, including green ammonia and green methanol, can help reduce emissions in industries where direct electrification is difficult.

Potential applications include fertiliser production, petroleum refining, shipping and power generation.

Their environmental benefits depend on production methods, energy sources and associated emissions.
