Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the 12-year journey of the Make in India initiative, pointing to growth in domestic production, investment and exports across several sectors.

Launched on September 25, 2014, the initiative was aimed at positioning India as a global hub for manufacturing, design and innovation.

The initiative now covers 27 key sectors, including 15 manufacturing sectors and 12 service sectors.

In a post on X, PM Modi highlighted increased domestic manufacturing, investment and exports as indicators of the initiative’s development over the past 12 years.

India’s electronics production has increased nearly sevenfold, from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26.

Mobile-phone production has grown even more significantly, rising approximately 33 times, from ₹18,000 crore to ₹6.27 lakh crore over the same period.

India is also identified in the government factsheet as the world’s second-largest mobile-phone manufacturer by volume.

Indigenous defence production has also expanded substantially.

The value of domestic defence production increased from ₹46,429 crore in 2014-15 to ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, according to the figures cited by the government.

The growth reflects the expansion of domestic manufacturing capabilities in the defence sector.

Vehicle production reached 31.03 million units in 2024-25, representing a 33% increase compared with 2014-15.

The pharmaceutical industry is another major manufacturing sector. India currently ranks third globally by pharmaceutical production volume and 11th by value, according to the government factsheet.

Pharmaceutical industry turnover reached ₹4,71,898 crore in 2024-25, recording a 9.5% CAGR since 2020-21.

Domestic medical-device manufacturing has also increased.

Production rose 48.2%, from ₹28,000 crore in 2019-20 to ₹41,500 crore in 2024-25, highlighting expansion in another strategic manufacturing segment.
