President Droupadi Murmu Begins Five-Day Summer Sojourn in Shimla; State Government Implements Smooth Traffic Management

Date:

Shimla, April 28, 2026 — The “Queen of Hills” has donned a festive yet high-security look as President Droupadi Murmu arrived for her five-day summer sojourn in Himachal Pradesh. The visit, scheduled from April 27 to May 1, 2026, has seen the state administration and local police working in tandem to ensure a seamless experience for both the visiting dignitary and the local residents.

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu accorded a warm welcome to the President upon her arrival at the Kalyani Helipad in Chharabra. The visit marks a significant moment for the state, highlighting Shimla’s enduring status as the summer retreat for the President of India at the historic Rashtrapati Niwas in Mashobra.

Comprehensive Security and Traffic Strategy

With the influx of tourists during the peak summer season, the Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhu, has prioritized public convenience alongside VVIP protocols. The Shimla Police has deployed approximately 1,000 personnel to manage security and traffic flow.

Key highlights of the management plan include:

  • Sector-Wise Regulation: The city has been divided into multiple sectors to localize traffic management and prevent city-wide bottlenecks.
  • Minimal Restrictions: Authorities have clarified that traffic halts are only temporary and strictly enforced during actual VVIP movement to minimize disruption to daily life.
  • Emergency Access: Special priority passes have been issued to ensure that essential services, including ambulances and fire brigades, have uninterrupted access to all routes.

Despite these efforts, some congestion was observed on key stretches such as the route from Tawi Chowk to Boileauganj. However, local authorities were quick to redirect traffic to alternative routes previously identified in the state’s contingency plan.

The President’s Itinerary: A Blend of Tradition and Progress

The President’s stay is packed with engagements that celebrate the cultural and educational milestones of Himachal Pradesh.

  1. April 28: A formal banquet hosted by the Governor at Lok Bhavan, Shimla, where the President will interact with state dignitaries.
  2. April 29: A visit to the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang—a marvel of Indian engineering that has transformed connectivity in the tribal regions of Lahaul and Spiti.
  3. April 30: The President will grace the convocation ceremony of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in Palampur, followed by an ‘At Home’ reception at the Rashtrapati Niwas.
  4. May 1: A visit to the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) in Shimla before her departure for New Delhi.

State Government’s Proactive Approach

The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led administration has been praised for its proactive stance in balancing the requirements of the high-profile visit with the needs of the tourism industry. The state government has issued advisories encouraging tourists to plan their travel during non-peak hours of the President’s movement.

The Director General of Police (DGP) emphasized a “people-friendly” approach, instructing officers to assist tourists and residents who might be unfamiliar with the temporary diversions. This “zero negligence” policy aims to showcase Himachal Pradesh’s hospitality and administrative efficiency on a national stage.

Looking Ahead

As the President continues her visit, the focus remains on ensuring that the beauty and tranquility of Shimla remain accessible. The state government’s successful management of this visit is seen as a testament to the robust coordination between the Raj Bhavan and the state secretariat.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay updated through the Shimla Police’s social media handles for real-time traffic updates. The administration’s commitment to “business as usual” for the public, while hosting the nation’s highest office, reflects a maturing infrastructure capable of handling global-scale events.
