R Ashwin Wants Bhuvneshwar Kumar in India’s 2027 World Cup Squad

Date:

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his early assessment of India’s potential squad for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, categorising players into his “yes“, “no“, and “maybe” lists.

Among his biggest talking points was a strong endorsement of veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whom Ashwin believes still has the quality and experience to contribute at the highest level despite being out of the national setup.

Ashwin questioned why Bhuvneshwar Kumar should not be considered for India’s ODI plans leading up to the 2027 World Cup.

Highlighting the seamer’s experience and ability with the new ball, Ashwin argued that the veteran still has plenty to offer and should remain in contention for selection if he continues performing consistently.

During his discussion on India’s long-term ODI planning, Ashwin grouped players into three categories:

  • Yes: Players he believes should form the core of India’s 2027 World Cup squad.
  • Maybe: Players who could strengthen their case with continued performances over the next year.
  • No: Players he currently does not see as part of India’s plans for the tournament.

Ashwin stressed that performances, fitness, and form over the coming months will ultimately determine squad selection.

According to Ashwin, experience remains invaluable in major ICC tournaments.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar brings:

  • Swing bowling expertise with the new ball.
  • Extensive international experience.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.
  • Leadership and mentorship for younger fast bowlers.

Ashwin believes those qualities could make the veteran a valuable option if he maintains strong domestic and franchise performances.

While backing experienced players, Ashwin acknowledged that India’s 2027 World Cup squad is still far from finalized.

With more than a year remaining before the tournament, he believes consistent performances in domestic cricket, bilateral ODIs, and ICC events will shape the final squad.
